There is nothing nicer than to see the village green filled with spectators and players alike, all enjoying a game of Sunday cricket. There is a relaxed ease about the day. People standing on the sidelines, or lounging on the park benches, sun perched high above in clear blue skies. Children play, and dogs bark, the perimeters of the pitch, becoming temporary playgrounds. Call me old fashioned or boringly conventional, but the game of cricket evokes special memories reminiscent of times gone by, when my own father used to bring me to the very same green to watch the teams play, resplendent in their whites, confirming my love of a game that is steeped in history and tradition.

Growing up on a diet of sport, to me there is nothing better than a Saturday or Sunday afternoon when the television screens and radio waves are filled with live reports from Wembley, Wimbledon, or Wincanton. Read the rest of article…

Shefflin more frustrated by shoulder injury than cruciate

Henry Shefflin has admitted his recovery from a shoulder injury has been more frustrating than battling back from either of his cruciate ligament operations.

But he still expects to make Kilkenny’s Leinster semi-final against Dublin, Carlow or Laois on June 23.

“I was always told, ‘It will come, it will come and give it time’. That’s what I was waiting on and obviously I’m more confident now being involved and I just want a clean run at it now,” said the 10-time All Star, who has never failed to start a championship match for Kilkenny since he made the team.

“I don’t want to be giving out about this and that because I have done enough complaining with the cruciates.

Ticats sign former Michigan QB Tate Forcier

Tate Forcier is heading north to pursue a professional football career.

The former Michigan quarterback confirmed in a text message to The Associated Press on Monday night that he has signed a three-year contract with Hamilton of the Canadian Football League. Forcier wrote that he is “very excited” to play for the Tiger-Cats.

He started for former Wolverines coach Rich Rodriguez ahead of Denard Robinson in 2009 and was a backup in 2010. He completed 60 per cent of his passes for 2,647 yards with 17 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

LOS ANGELES, May 8 – Denver, Atlanta and Chicago refused to buckle under the threat of elimination from the NBA playoffs on Tuesday and kept their hopes alive with crucial wins, while Orlando’s season came to an end after Indiana wrapped up their series 4-1.

The Denver Nuggets held off a stunning Los Angeles Lakers fightback to win 102-99 to trail 3-2 in the Western Conference, while in the East the Hawks edged Boston 87-86 while injury-hit Chicago dug deep to beat Philadelphia 77-69.
